The Program:
Louisville Head Football Coach, Chris Kappas was the day’s speaker. Coach Kappas thanked the club for their community support and tries to instill the same community mindset into the students in his football program. Coach Kappas was proud to share some of the team’s recent community involvement and asked that if anyone has a need that the team can fill to let him know. This upcoming season is Coach Kappas’ third year. The team has developed a strong culture around hard work and values that will help the players grow into confident young men and professionals. Coach Kappas is confident in this team’s depth, size and talent. His team has 76 players and a strong pool of underclassmen and eighth graders. He is also proud of their weight training program and the development of the team’s mental fortitude. Finally, Coach Kappas was asked to comment on the potential new league. He believes being in a league is a positive and will allow players to receive various honors and opportunities that they have not been afforded by being an independent program. Mrs. Raineri asked if we make money from Second Fridays. President Dutter and the Honorable Barb DeJacimo declared that we actually spend money on Second Fridays. President Dutter waxed poetically about the farmer’s market and elaborated on the ways in which the proceeds are distributed to assist in further developing the market and event.
2. New Members – Applications have been received for Nicole Israel and Shannon Benson. The Board of Rotarian Trustees approved both applications. Shorty Weisel motioned/ Joannie Aljancic seconded a motion to approve Nicole Israel. The motion was approved unanimously. Brock Hutchison motioned/ Donald Marshall seconded a motion to approve Shannon Benson. The motion approved unanimously.
3. Flag Banner Proposal – The noble Dennis Valentine has submitted a proposal for the flag banner.
4. Peace Pole Update – The exalted duo of Shorty Weisel and Jim Edwards have been working on this. President Dutter would like to invest $500 in this project from the project fund. He believes this will pay for three poles. The poles will say, “May Peace on Earth Prevail” in multiple different languages. The Board would like to also include a Rotary emblem on the pole. The Board has approved this request and the vote must now be presented before the membership. President Dutter is still deciding on locations, but expects these poles to land in our parks. Kathy Raineri motioned/ Eva Roshong seconded a motion to approve a not-to exceed amount of $500 for the Peace Pole Project. Discussion – Don Marshall inquired about diverting the funds to the Texas Relief program, instead of the poles. He also asked how the pole idea came to fruition. President Dutter exclaimed that the poles are a Rotary International Project. Denny Valentine informed the Club that there is or was a similar pole at Paradise Church. The motion was approved unanimously.
5. Second Friday Collection for Sister Club in Kerryville, Texas – The Rotary Club will collect donations at Second Fridays. The money will be donated to the Rotary Club in Kerryville, Texas. Volunteers are needed around 3:30pm to set up tents and vendors at the Market. Volunteers are also needed at 10:00pm to help take down tables. We are now trying to find families for the next round and establish a bank of hosts.

7. Amphitheater – Randy is working on this project. There is a lot of bureaucracy required to administer the grant. The City is working on this project with Randy. President Dutter addressed concerns about the soft-top. He said it is out of the budget to continue with the hard-top. At this point, the project belongs to the City of Louisville.

Speaker Alan Harold- Mark Sigler thrilled that Alan Harold is here. Mr Harold grew up in Louisville and is a long time friend of Mark Sigler's son. Thrilled to be back in Louisville. Alan was appointed in September as County Commissioner and had been county auditor 14 years. As the Commissioner he has a responsibility to the 375k residents of Stark county. Commisioner gets to decide how much to spend in each category. He is responsible for the record center (back to 1800s). The commissioners own all county property- vehicles included. The Commissioners are the contracting authority, over see Stark Job and Family Services, sanitary engineering, building department, and human resources. Other Commissioners Richard “route 30’ Regula and Bill Smith work as a team with Mr. Harold. As a Commissioner there are alot of direct responsibilities. County government is the long arm of the state and they have to follow the state law of the letter. The way he, as county commissioners, can make a difference is to find a way to help what is going on with the local community and find ways to get it done. We have alot to be proud of in our county. The Stark Commity Foundation put out a report that states that we are getting older and smaller. We have been relatively steady at 375k for two generations. We need to set conditions for growth and focus on Economic development. It is a long game to create the conditions that will enable that to happen. We look at ways to clean up and attract new business. We are in desperate need of income aligned/affordable housing. That is a barrier to expansion. Stark County did a study on the continum of housing life cycle and the housing market. There is a void of affordable housing. We can't be afraid of having options. #1 other than if ther is available land to develop, is do you have the people that can do the jobs? Currently Stark County is building a new jail on 62. We are going from needing 8 staff to needing 3 staff per unit. 70% of the construction work is going to Stark County contractors. That's something that we “tout” to companies that are looking to come to Stark. We look to capitalize on that. What attracted me most to the job of Commissioner is being able to create and attract opportunities for Stark County residents.
Questions: we have vacant J&L Steel building any plans for it? Answer : we have limited $$s to invest in growth and did a land study and we don't have a lot of room for commercial growth. That site needs a lot of work.
Question: 20 years ago the Commissioners paid $1 for Molly Stark how much will it cost to tear down? Answer: It's going to be 2.4 million and should be down in November. The front part is interesting architecture but the back is very utilitarian 1940s hospital. Molly Stark is full of asbestos and not safe.
Guest Charlie Roberts was an intern with Alan.
